ADVERSE REACTIONS OF VIAGRA
Viagra, whose brand name is Sildenafil citrate, was manufactured to treat erectile dysfunction. Viagra has adverse effects, like any other drugs, which were generally transient and mild and moderate in nature.
In clinical trials worldwide, over 3700 patients (aged 19-87 years) were given VIAGRA and more than 550 patients were treated for more than one year.
The incidence of some adverse effects was found to have increased in flexible-dose studies. The nature of some adverse effects in flexible-dose studies, which more closely reflect the recommended dosage regimen, was comparable to that for fixed-dose studies. Headache and flushing were the most commonly reported adverse reactions. For doses which is above the recommended dose range, adverse effects were found to be more common. The percentage of myocardial infarction (death of a segment of heart muscle) were 1.1/100 person-years for men receiving sildenafil and for those receiving placebo. The mortality rates due to cardiovascular reasons were 0.3/100 person-years for men getting sildenafil and those getting placebo.
In a post- marketing surveillance of sildenafil citrate, the following adverse effects were reported:
- Cardiac disorders: tachycardia (increase in the heart rate above normal) - Immune system disorders: hypersensitivity reaction (including skin rash) - Gastrointestinal disorders: vomiting - Vascular disorders: hypotension, syncope, epistaxis (nosebleed) - Reproductive system and breast disorders: prolonged erection and/or priapism (persistent painful erection) - Eye disorders: eye pain, red eyes or bloodshot eyes
